Economics

Our economic system is shaped by the same conviction that shapes everything else here: that God's guidance in the Qur'an is sufficient, not only for matters of worship, but for how we earn, trade, and share what we have. We do not treat economics as a separate, secular sphere set apart from faith. Wealth, in our understanding, is a trust from God, and the way it is earned, exchanged, and distributed is a matter of justice, not merely efficiency.

A Digital Currency Built on Trust

Freeport operates on digital currency, designed to reflect the economic principles set out in the Qur'an rather than simply imitating conventional financial systems. Every transaction within our society is recorded transparently, ensuring that trade is conducted honestly and that no member can manipulate weights, measures, or values to their advantage. A principle the Qur'an addresses directly and takes seriously. Digital currency allows us to maintain this transparency at scale, giving every member confidence that the economic system they participate in is fair, traceable, and free from hidden manipulation.

Choosing a digital system was also a practical decision. It allows us to operate with a level of independence from external financial institutions, reducing our exposure to systems built on interest-bearing debt and speculative practices that the Qur'an forbids. Our currency is administered by the Administration under the oversight of the Imam, in keeping with the same principles of trusteeship and accountability that govern the rest of our society, ensuring that monetary policy serves the well-being of our members rather than the interests of any small group.

No Interest, No Exploitation

Our economy is built without interest or usury, which the Qur'an condemns in clear and repeated terms. Lending within our society is structured around fairness rather than profit extracted from another's need, and we reject financial practices that allow wealth to grow simply through the passage of time rather than through honest effort, risk, or productive exchange. Where financing or investment is needed, it is structured around shared risk and shared reward, rather than guaranteed return regardless of outcome.

We hold the same standard against exploitation more broadly. Fraud, deception, hoarding for the sake of driving up prices, and unjust enrichment at another's expense have no place in Freeport's economy. Trade is meant to be a mutual benefit, entered into freely and honestly by both parties, and our economic system is built to protect that principle at every level.

Zakat and the Circulation of Wealth

Wealth is not meant to accumulate endlessly in the hands of a few while others go without. In keeping with the Qur'an's command to give zakat, a portion of wealth is set aside to support those in need within our society, the poor, the orphaned, and others whose circumstances require support from the community around them. Because our currency is digital, this obligation can be calculated and fulfilled with clarity and consistency, ensuring that this pillar of economic justice is not left to guesswork or convenience but is built into the structure of our economy itself.

We do not see this as charity in the conventional sense, but as a right owed by the wealthy to the less fortunate, and a means by which wealth continues to circulate through our society rather than pooling permanently in one place.

Honest Labor and Fair Ownership

Freeport recognizes and protects the right of every member to own property and to benefit from their own honest labor. Work is treated with dignity, and the Qur'an's repeated instruction to deal justly with laborers, to pay what is owed promptly and fairly, shapes how employment and compensation are handled within our society. At the same time, ownership is understood as a trust rather than an unlimited right; property is to be used and enjoyed responsibly, without harming others or the shared resources of our society.

In Service of Justice

Ultimately, the purpose of our economic system is not growth for its own sake, but justice. Ensuring that every member has what they need, that wealth is earned and exchanged honestly, and that no one is exploited in the process. Our digital currency is simply the tool through which we try to live this out with transparency and consistency. As with every other part of our society, our economy exists to serve the people, under the guidance of the Qur'an, rather than the other way around.
